Happy day everyone!! THANK YOU FOR ALL THE LOVE!! Yesterday was a wonderful day! I am so grateful for all the kind words, birthday wishes and thoughts! I felt so loved and I am so grateful! It was a wonderful day! I am so excited to share one of my favorite birthday traditions! It is seriously one of my favorite parts of my birthday!
Those of you who are moms, you know your childrens birthdays, you remember all the big moments of the day, you remember how tiny they were, how you felt when you held them for the first time. All those things come back on their birthday. When my oldest Emma turned one year old, my sister-in-law Lisa sent me a card, with the sweetest note to me, and put into her eloquent words how I was feeling, bittersweet, a little sad, happy and also shocked at how quickly that year had passed. Her letter meant so much to me.
It changed how I felt about my mom, I thought of her and how she must feel as we have all gotten older and grown up. I am one of 11 children, so just about every month, she has a child with a birthday! I wanted to acknowledge her, say thank you, and let her know how grateful I am that she is my mom. I know we have Mothers Day, but this is just from me to her to say thank you, to say thank you on a day that literally changed her life. Every day that you become a mom; a brand new mom, a second time, a third or an eighth… those days change your life.
So what is this tradition? On my birthday I always bring my mom flowers, just a simple way to let her know I love her and I am thankful. No matter where I am, if I live close by or far away, I will either drop them off myself ( my favorite way) or I will send them.
You know what is so great? SHE LOVES IT! Each year, she is still surprised and still so thankful. She always says ” I was hoping you were going to do that” She is so cute, how can you not just adore her?
It is not a big deal, it is not a bunch of money, but it speaks volumes to her. I love my mom very much and I want her to know that every day, especially on my birthday. All you moms know, being a mom can be hard, thankless, exhausting and the most wonderful thing in the entire world. If I can show her how grateful I am in a simple way, I sure want to do that! SHE LOVES IT! A perfect day to do that is the day you were born, she is remembering all those moments she has had with you, that day that changed her forever. Bringing her flowers is an easy way to say all of that and more.
By the way, my favorite place to get flowers if I live in town is from Aldis! $3.99 a half dozen roses! Grab a vase from the dollar store and there you go! SO if you live near an ALDI’s….. it is fabulous for flowers and they live quite a long time!
This year, they also had hanging baskets, so I got her one of those also, she is so goofy, she kept hiding behind the flowers!
I love my birthday, I am always so excited for it to come, I am grateful to be alive another year, grateful for sweet friends, a wonderful husband, an amazing family and even the hardships that mold me into who I am and help me become better, and I love birthdays because I get to be reminded of how lucky I am to have such wonderful parents. My dad is amazing too, as I visiting yesterday, he mentioned he loves flowers too, so I may have to start including him on that gift! I did not even think about my dad! Isn’t that terrible! I told him, you should have said something years ago! He just smiled and said ” I love that you do something so sweet for your mom” Isn’t he just adorable too? Greatest man I know! Next year he is getting flowers!
I could share stories all day about how wonderful they both are and still feel like I could share more, so I leave you with the simple phrase, “tell them”, let your parents know how much you love them.
Since being married, Mike has started doing this for his mom and she loves it just as much! (I hope Mike picks it up for our kids :) little hint for ya babe!)
I would love to hear if you all have any special birthday traditions, what things do you do to make that day special?
