Who loves to snack? Who wants to save millions of dollars? Who loves Pico De Gallo? Well this girl right here sure does! I could eat it every day! I was at the store the other day and saw fresh pico, I picked it up wondering how much it was… and was blown away!! HOLY COW! It was expensive! I thought this is terrible! I am on a budget! I am trying to save money not spend it on something as easy as Pico de Gallo! People should not have to pay so much for such a delicious treat! People need to know how easy and how quick and how inexpensive it really is to make delicious pico de gallo! And okay, you may not save millions of dollars making your own pico de gallo, but you certainly will saves tens of dollars and maybe even hundreds over the course of the years! Hey every little bit counts right?
So today I am going to share with you my favorite quick and easy recipe~ so you can make your own Pico De Gallo! AND bonus at the end I am going to tell you a super way to store your pico, so that it does not smell up your fridge! Let’s be honest, onions are stinky little buggers!
So I think pico de gallo is a super low fat snack, I love it with chips, I love it on fish, I love it with rice, on tacos, the list can go on and on …
I am not a fan of spicy, never have been, it may have something to do with the fact that when I was five, an older family friend ( he was 13 at the time) decided it would be funny to give me a jalapeño and told me it was a pickle. I remember it clearly, taking a huge bite and feeling like my mouth was gonna burn off! Needless to say since that time I have not enjoyed spicy anything. I have forgiven said boy, he was 13 and well 13 yr olds can have a terrible sense of humor at times … back to pico.
So you can rightly assume this is not a spicy recipe, feel free to add a jalapeño if you would like it spicy.
Gather your ingredients, you will need Cilantro, Tomatoes, Red Onion, Salt, Lime Juice (fresh preferred) and Garlic.
These are a few of my favorite tools that I love, the ones that make this recipe a bit easier are this OXO Good Grips Chopper, a serrated edge knife, Garlic Press and a Juice Reamer, these are my favorites! That being said, you could do the whole recipe with just a knife. I am not being paid to share these, these are truly my favorite tools!
A great rule of thumb is to do one thirds, one third tomato, one third cilantro, one third onion, mix in the juice of one lime, salt to taste and a few garlic cloves and you have delicious pico!
Are you almost ready for that tip on how to store your Pico? Almost, almost
- 6 tomatoes chop
- 2 cloves garlic
- juice of one lime
- one cup chopped cilantro
- one cup chopped red onion
- salt to taste
- chop tomatoes coarsely about ¼ inch pieces
- chop onions finely
- chop cilantro finely
- mince or finely chop garlic
- juice one lime
- mix all ingredients well and add salt to taste
- DELICIOUS!
So now the you have made your Pico De Gallo, and in my case eaten almost the whole bowl and you really do need to go to bed and yes lets just grab one more chip…. okay I am finally putting it away, and oops I fell asleep and now it is early morning and as I wake up…. I smell a smell that is not fabulous… have you ever left out a bowl of pico? You wake up in the morning and the whole house has a bad oniony smell ( in my opinion, that smell reminds me of teenagers that need to shower!) Never happened to you, oh okay, well I was just kidding that never happened to me either……
If you do remember to put it away, good for you! But, what do you put it in? Plasticware? I used to have one bowl that I just used for Pico, because no matter how much I washed it, the smell would not leave…. and if it was open… well smelly fridge time…. cleaning out the fridge time would soon follow!
Not anymore! I told you I would share a super idea to prevent both of those things happening…. I bet you have what you need right now in your kitchen somewhere! The ideal vessel for storing Pico is…..
A MASON JAR! Or any GLASS JAR! ( um with a lid of course, remember we don’t want a smelly fridge!)
Just store your Pico in a mason jar or any glass jar that you have ( jelly, apple sauce, pasta sauce, hot fudge) Clean it out, keep the lid, throw that Pico in there and you won’t have to worry about ruining your container, or smelling up your fridge!
I think it looks pretty too! I have used pickle jars, and jelly jars, my favorite is a mason jar, not sure why, makes me feel domesticated, like I canned it. Just use a canning funnel to get it in there, super easy too!
So next time you are at the store, check out the “fresh” pico and think of this post and remember how inexpensive and how easy it is! You may not save hundreds of dollars… well maybe depends on how much you love pico, this girl saves quite a bit! Okay, so go grab some chips and a good movie, get those ingredients , don’t forget a mason jar and go have a party!
AND for the love, put away the Pico before bed, I am telling you…. not a fabulous smell at all if you forget!

This is a great pico recipe! Lime is good for taste, but lemon is good if you want to preserve it longer! The same goes for salt. Also, try adding the juice from when you chop everything up, like the tomatoes.
If you add avocado to this recipe and smash all the ingredients together with a spoon or fork, you’ve got guacamole! There’s so much you can do with these ingredients!
